New Puppy and New Kitten

I’m sorry I haven’t been on in such a long time; unfortunately, I will be gone for who knows how long. My significant other and I just adopted a new puppy, which has been taking up most of my time, and we’ll be adopting a new kitten in a week or two. I wanted the puppy; we’re getting the kitten both as a playmate for the puppy and because my significant other wants one.

I have no idea how long I’ll be gone. I understand if you unfollow me; I am going on a hiatus for who knows how long. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry I’m going to be gone for so long, and I love all of you so dearly for putting up with me and all of my absences!

So I took my kid to Forever 21 today to look for clothes, because that’s what you do with teenage girls on weekends. <Not to sound creepy: I’m 23; my kid is my half sister who lives with me instead of her parents.>

I think Mels did it on purpose, she was smart enough even as a toodler to find Amy and Rory. Which means I think she wanted to get caught, wanted to have Amy tell her to stop, to say things like “this is how girls get killed” She didnt want a friendly relationship with them, she wanted a parental relationship so she caused it herself. Thats why she is so happy with herself when she walks out of the last gif, because her mother is still lecturing her about misbehaving when a friend would probably have been in there with her.

Harmful stereotypes like these are more influential than we usually care to acknowledge, often leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even in areas where actual performance is equal, when a certain group is reminded that they are supposed to be bad at something, their performance weakens. Now imagine that the message of “women are bad at science, men are bad at feelings” is subtly expressed to everyone starting at birth. A test of social sensitivity or math only finds gender differences because the participants are aware of how they are expected to perform. Playing with gender identity has a huge impact on success at skills usually thought to be better suited for the opposite sex. When a group of people are asked to write a first-person story from the perspective of someone named Ashley, they perform significantly worse on tests of math skills than a control group.

It’s not enough to stop teachers from making gendered statements about math and science. The children are getting that message every day as they interact with society. The myth has to be actively dispelled. Until we stop subconsciously teaching our daughters that they are less intelligent or capable than our sons, they will go through their academic lives with an unfair handicap.
